Mindfulness & Visualization

Steph Curry on training his mind is beneficial for sport

"A mindfulness practice is the foundation of Peak Performance & life. It is simply ‘exercise for your mind’ to live your life more in the present moment. Your mind must be clear, calm, and focused in order to be mindful about your nutrition, movement, & other lifestyle habits throughout your day. We’ll work together to improve your mindfulness & mental skills to help you start the journey to peak mental performance."

It's simply "exercise for your mind"

Just like you exercise, tone, and strengthen your physical body & muscles... you can strengthen, sharpen and focus your mind!

  • Stay with your breathe as an anchor, observing your thoughts & letting them pass without judgment
  • As you become aware your mind has drifted into the past or future, simply bring your awareness back to the breathe
  • If you have trouble keeping your mind on the breath, count each one up to ten, then start over again at one
  • Don’t try to control your breath, simply watch it... fast or slow, deep or shallow... simply watch & observe
  • It is a PRACTICE, just like you practice school work, sports, music, etc.
  • Nothing becomes perfect overnight - daily consistency is key for long-term improvement
  • It is a different experience for everyone - let go of any expectations you may have for your experience
  • The goal/idea is to use the same amount of mindfulness when we sit & practice throughout school, sports, work, & life
  • Benefits: ability to focus & concentrate, compassion, cognitive growth, positive outcome expectation, less stress & test anxiety, social-emotional skills, better athletic performance & sleep, and more mindfulness throughout daily life!

how does yoga fit in with all this?

What most of us understand to be 'yoga' is not the full picture. 'Yoga' is way more than just the physical yoga poses (Asana)...

Yoga_WarriorPose.jpg

"Yoga comes from the word yoke; to bind, to unite, bring together. I describe what we do in a yoga class as – going through the body, to quiet the mind, and rest the spirit.  We all experience that binding of mind-body-spirit in other ways, like running, gardening, knitting, swimming, hiking, painting, and so many other ways.  The physical practice that we do in a yoga class is actually called asana which means seat for prayer.  Asana was created as a way to quiet our busy, chatty minds in order to be able to pray and meditate.  That’s all it is — going through the body, to quiet the mind, and rest the spirit."
